Driving to school
Using the car is the least environmentally friendly way to get to school, children get no exercise and it is often stressful trying to find parking. But sometimes using the car is the only option: you may need to get to work, or you / your child may have a disability preventing walking, cycling or scooting. Even if you have to use the car, there are things you can do:
- Try Car Sharing: car sharing is where you share the journey to school with another family / child. It's a great way of cutting fuel costs and reducing the number of cars on the road. Find out more about car sharing
- Try Park and Stride: this is where you park slightly further away and walk the remaining distance to school. You can still get exercise as well as help reduce the number of cars and air pollution near the school gates. You can identify your own parking locations, or ask the school about predetermined Park and Stride sites (usually pubs, places of worship etc.)
- Avoid Idling: please turn your engine off when waiting to pick up / drop off your child. This prevents toxic pollution entering the air which is harmful to children and the environment (you can also save money on fuel).
Please ensure you park safely - your convenience is not worth a child's life. Parking on School Keep Clear Markings is unsafe. You could also receive a Penalty Charge Notice from Nottinghamshire's camera enforcement cars. Find out more about safe driving [Word] or Driveway Sharing [Word].
