Driving to school

Using the car is the least environmentally friendly way to get to school. You get no exercise, and you can’t see your friends! But sometimes using the car is the only option: your parents / guardians may need to get to work, or you or your parents / guardians may have a disability preventing walking, cycling or scooting.

Even if you have to use the car, there are still things you can do to help yourself and the environment:

  • Try Car Sharing: if you have a friend that lives close to you why don’t you give them a lift to school, or go with them to school? This is a great way of reducing the number of cars on the road and catch up with friends before school starts. Make sure you look out for the car sharing letter which will be sent home from school.
  • Try Park & Stride: this is where you park slightly further away and walk the remaining distance to school. You can still get exercise as well as help reduce the number of cars and air pollution near the school gates. Ask your school about Park and Stride locations.
  • Make sure your parents / guardians are parking safely and not idling: parents / guardians should not be parking or stopping on the School Keep Clear zig-zags. This is to ensure those walking, cycling and scooting to school are kept safe, and they could even get a fine! Also, make sure the car engine is turned off when your parents or guardian drops you off and picks you up from school. This is to stop toxic pollution entering the air and damaging your lungs and the environment.
