Using public transport

Public transport may be a good option if you live too far away from school to walk, cycle, or scoot.

  • It is good for the environment! Taking public transport helps reduce the number of cars on the road and improve air quality outside the school gates.
  • It is social! Taking public transport to / from allows you to spend quality time with your child / children/ It also provides a good opportunity to develop a child independence and prepares them for senior school.
  • It is less stressful! No more wasted time stuck in traffic or trying to find a parking space. You can use the time to catch up on social media instead!

Top tips

  1. Some schools have their own dedicated school buses: ask your school about the cost and routes this takes to find out if it’s a viable option.

  3. Did you know that there are a number of County Council Travel Assistance schemes? These include the Under 16 Mainstream Travel Assistance scheme, Post 16 Mainstream Travel Assistance scheme, as well as travel assistance for children and young people with special transport needs. In some cases, you may be entitled to FREE bus travel.
