The process and application

Shared Lives carers are self-employed and offer accommodation in their own homes to people with care and support needs. We welcome applicants from all walks of life and no specific qualifications or experience are needed. What matters most is a kind, caring and compassionate character, and a desire to help others.

There is flexibility to provide full-time placements, or to offer short breaks.

Eligibility criteria

  • you must be at least 18 years old, have a spare room and the right to work in the UK
  • you will be required to complete online training so access to a computer, laptop, or tablet is essential
  • you will need to register as self-employed with HMRC for tax purposes.

Application process

There are five steps in the application process, and it takes around three months to complete. You will have a dedicated coordinator to support and guide you through the process.

Application

Send us your details in the online form and we will invite you to an information event to find out more about the role and ask any questions you may have.

Assessment

This stage includes visits to your home to check safety and suitability. We will also carry out reference checks, a DBS check and check your right to work in the UK.

Training

Full training is provided to help you make a positive impact as a Shared Lives carer. It is important to approach the training with enthusiasm and dedication.

Initial training includes:

  • first aid: learn life-saving techniques and how to respond in emergencies
  • safeguarding: understand how to protect vulnerable individuals from harm or abuse
  • Mental Capacity Act: familiarize yourself with legal principles related to decision-making capacity
  • Oliver McGowan training: focuses on supporting individuals with learning disabilities and autism
  • medication management: learn about administering and monitoring medications
  • finance: understand the financial aspects related to care provision
  • care certificate: covers essential knowledge and skills for care workers.

We also provide regular refresher training to help you maintain the highest standards of care.

Approval

Application approved by the Shared Lives panel.

Matching

We have a robust matching service to make sure placements suit everyone involved. We always try to match people with similar skills, hobbies and experience. You will also have an allocated coordinator to provide ongoing support, including regular monitoring visits every 12 weeks.

Further support

Ongoing support, social events, and access to Shared Lives Plus are incredibly valuable. They create a supportive network where you can connect with fellow carers, share experiences, and learn from each another. If you actively participate and use the support available, it will enhance your journey as a Shared Lives carer.

Shared Lives Plus is a UK membership charity for people living and working in Shared Lives care. Visit the Shared lives Plus website for further information and membership fees.
