The Queen's Platinum Jubilee: in numbers

Queen Elizabeth military inspection

  • 6 February 1952: Queen Elizabeth II becomes the first sovereign in over 200 years to accede the throne while abroad.
  • 2 June 1953: Queen Elizabeth's coronation takes place. More than 20 million people watched on television, outnumbering the radio audience for the first time.
  • The Queen has owned over thirty corgi dogs since her accession in 1952.
  • Queen Elizabeth II and Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, were married on 20 November, 1947. They were married for 73 years at the time of Philip's death.
  • Queen Elizabeth II is the nation's longest reigning monarch, and the longest still-serving sovereign in the world. Sunday 6 February marked 70 years on the throne, or 25,568 days.
  • The Queen has used a passport 0 times. As British passports are issued in her name, she doesn't need one. All other members of the Royal Family have passports.
  • Her Majesty has seen 14 prime ministers during her reign, beginning with Sir Winston Churchill.
  • The Queen has two birthdays. She was born on 21 April 1926. The Queen's second birthday, usually referred to as her 'official birthday', usually takes place on the second Saturday of June. The tradition of the British monarch celebrating two birthdays stems back to 1748, during the reign of King George II. As the king’s birthday fell in late autumn, the weather wasn’t suitable for a large, public celebration in honour of his birthday, so the monarch’s official birthday celebrations were combined with the Trooping the Colour parade in summer.
