A Pilgrim Adventure is an exciting new augmented reality activity book aimed at children that allows them to discover the fascinating story of how William Brewster, a boy from Nottinghamshire, helped to change the world.
William was born in the Nottinghamshire village of Scrooby in about 1586. When he was young, he followed the King’s Church but as he grew up he began to think differently.
He started to question the traditional way that the Church did things and so William and his friends set up their own religious group called the Separatists (they wanted to ‘separate’ from the traditional Church).
This angered the King so the Separatists fled to Holland and then in 1620, to America. It was here that they became known as the Pilgrims because they had been on a long journey or ‘pilgrimage’ to start a new life.
It was hard for William and the Pilgrims when they first landed in America and that winter nearly half of them died of hunger and disease.
However, the Native American people they met helped by showing them how to grow crops and hunt, so they would not go hungry. Soon they were strong enough to build a few houses. Eventually the warmer weather came and there was a good harvest.
William and his friends held a great feast to celebrate. This event became known as Thanksgiving and is still celebrated in America today.
