Fibre broadband roll out reaches the residents and businesses of Granby…

Thanks to the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire programme, fibre optic broadband has reached the picturesque village of Granby, Vale of Belvoir.

The Vale of Belvoir is an area of natural beauty on the borders of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire in England. The name derives from the Norman-French for beautiful view and there’s no denying it, the views from this village across the Vale are glorious. The view of broadband also has suddenly vastly improved.

Initially Granby was listed as an area set to benefit from the programme in Contract 2, with delivery expected to start around April 2016, however, Nottinghamshire County Council were able to bring forward the deployment of this cabinet to February delivering fibre to the village ahead of schedule, pleasing a number of residents within the village.

Local Councillor and resident, John Rainbow heard that fibre broadband was being rolled out within Granby and held a watching brief since reading about it on the Nottinghamshire County Council’s website and by keeping up to date with national government press releases.

Councillor Rainbow explained: “I have lived in Granby for almost 6 years. In the early days it wasn’t clear if Granby were set to benefit from the programme, however, when the press release confirming the expected coverage of Contract 2 was announced, I was extremely pleased.

“Sending large documents was always a frustrating and time consuming process and being faced with the PC constantly timing out and having to start all over was very cumbersome. Downloading updates to my operating system would take hours, however, since the upgrade to fibre optic broadband these tasks can be achieved in under 2 minutes.”

“Doing things quickly online is important and the benefits of fibre broadband are right for me, from food shopping to booking to researching travel arrangements. I can even download my daily paper in seconds! As lots more services seem to be moving towards being online, it is important that being able to access them becomes effortless.”

“In addition, and as part of my Parish Councillor work, I also manage the village website www.granbycumsutton.org, ensuring this is continually updated with interesting news and features that may be of interest to local residents and businesses. Access to good speeds has enabled a faster experience when changing the images and managing content, especially as our server is in America. I used to have to do this in bite size chunks but now it can be done much faster – something that I would not have been able to do if we didn’t have fibre optic.”

Another local resident of 25 years, Mike Wiseman explained: ”I first read about fibre optic broadband coming in the local Newsletter and from Councillor Rainbow. As soon as it went live I made the switch and it’s much better than before. The upgrade process was seamless – gone are the days of a painfully slow internet experience.”
