Active Travel Fund
About the Active Travel Fund
The government’s Active Travel Fund has been set up to support the Gear Change strategy and to provide funding to support local authorities in implementing measures which will benefit walking and cycling.
The first round of funding (Tranche 1) was announced in May 2020. A £250m Emergency Active Travel Fund (EATF) was set up to deliver quick emergency interventions to make cycling and walking safer. The aim of government’s EATF was to embed walking and cycling as part of long-term commuting habits to secure the associated health, air quality and congestion benefits.
A second round of funding from the Active Travel Fund (ATF) was announced in July 2020. Tranche 2 was for the implementation of long-term measures to benefit walking and cycling which looked to reallocate road space to cyclists and pedestrians and alter the status quo of the road. All schemes submitted as part of the bid had to meet specific criteria. The schemes we are delivering as part of Tranche 2 are detailed below and further information can be found on the Active Travel Fund Tranche 2 webpage.
In May 2022 it was publicly announced that we were successful in securing funding from the Active Travel Fund Tranche 3. Details of the bid and the schemes for which we secured funding are detailed below and further information can be found on the Active Travel Fund Tranche 3 webpage.
Tranche 4
In May 2023, the government announced that the county council secured £1.1m to improve Baulk Lane between Stapleford and the Toton Lane tram terminus at Bardills.
The funding secures the delivery of this scheme subject to the necessary design, consultation, and approval process. Further information on the Council’s Active Travel Fund Tranche 4 bid can be found on the Active Travel Fund Tranche 4 webpage.
Tranche 3
In March 2022, the government announced that the county council has secured £4.6m from Tranche 3 of the Government’s Active Travel Fund to develop the following three schemes.
Nottinghamshire County Council has been successful in securing £4.6m from Tranche 3 of the Government’s Active Travel Fund.
- A611 Derby Road, Mansfield.
- A612 Colwick Loop Road, Netherfield.
- B6021 Kirkby Folly Road, Sutton in Ashfield.
The funding secures the delivery of these three schemes subject to the necessary design, consultation, and approval processes. Further information on the Council’s Active Travel Fund Tranche 3 bid can be found on the Active Travel Fund Tranche 3 webpage.
The DfT has also awarded the county council £79K to explore the potential Mini-Holland scheme in Stapleford.
The funding secured is for a feasibility study to identify potential transformational cycle and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure improvements within the targeted area.
Further information can be found on the Stapleford Mini-Holland webpage.
Tranche 2
In November 2020, the Government announced that the county council secured £2.18m from Tranche 2 of the Government’s Active Travel Fund.
The funding secured was less than the total value of the schemes included in the bid, therefore further feasibility work was undertaken on the proposed schemes followed by an initial consultation on the potential schemes in February/March 2021 to help determine a Tranche 2 programme. A round of consultation was undertaken in July/August 2021 on three of the schemes proposed as part of the Tranche 2 programme and the status of the schemes are as follows:
Beeston cycling improvements
The scheme proposed is for a point closure to through traffic on Dovecote Lane to provide a quiet route for cyclists.
A further round of consultation has been undertaken between Thursday 17 March, up to and including Wednesday 13 April. The results of the consultation are currently being analysed by officers.
High Pavement, Sutton in Ashfield
The two-way cycle route has been constructed and opened to the public on the 13 May 2022. You can find out more about this scheme by reading our press release.
Regatta Way, West Bridgford
The fully segregated two-way cycleway on Regatta Way in West Bridgford opened to the public in summer 2022.
Further information on the Active Travel Fund Tranche 2 schemes can be found on the Active Travel Fund Tranche 2 webpage.
Behavioural Change Programme
In advance of the routes being implemented, a programme of behavioural change active travel promotional measures has been undertaken with organisations and community groups close to the improvement corridors.
