Notts home energy support
Helping you stay warm, save energy, and lower your bills
We are dedicated to helping residents of Nottinghamshire improve their home’s energy efficiency, reduce energy bills, and stay warm throughout the year. With rising energy costs, it’s more important than ever to make your home as energy efficient as possible.
We collaborate with regional partners, and national initiatives to provide access to grant-funded installations and retrofit solutions. Our work is part of a larger effort to tackle fuel poverty and achieve Net Zero targets across the region.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a government energy efficiency scheme. Its aim is to help reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty by improving energy efficiency of homes occupied by low income, fuel poor and vulnerable households.
For more information visit Energy Company Obligation (ECO) and see if you could access an ECO grant for heating and insulation improvements.
Supporting energy efficiency upgrades for low-income households
The Home Upgrade Grant (HUG2) offers grant funding to help low-income households in Nottinghamshire make their homes more energy efficient. This programme supports properties that are off the gas grid and focuses on improving heating systems and insulation to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs.
This grant is delivered by Nottinghamshire County Council.
For more information visit Home Upgrade Grant (HUG2) and see if you could access an ECO grant for heating and insulation improvements.
Supporting retrofitting across Nottinghamshire
We have an ambition to support retrofit beyond the delivery of retrofit grants.
The Local Authority Retrofit Accelerator (LARA) project focuses on increasing retrofit demand and building supply chain capacity across local communities. We will be working with The MCS Foundation, Connected Places Catapult, All 19 Local Authorities and other key partners.
About LARA
The LARA programme addresses the need to increase retrofit demand and overcome the challenges in the UK’s retrofit system. Piloted by The MCS Foundation and supported by partners such as The National Retrofit Hub and UK Green Building Council, the programme brings together local stakeholders to develop and implement retrofit strategies.
Key elements of the programme
Strategic engagement: engaging local authorities, housing providers, and stakeholders to identify retrofit opportunities and establish a clear plan.
Collaborative workshops: stakeholders work together to analyse existing systems and devise solutions that will help secure further investment and ensure successful retrofitting.
Retrofitting solutions: increasing access to grant funding for home energy efficiency improvements, including insulation and heating systems.
Why LARA matters
LARA is essential in helping Nottinghamshire take significant steps towards meeting Net Zero targets. It focuses on reducing fuel poverty, improving home energy efficiency, and creating warmer, healthier living environments. The programme also strengthens the local economy by driving demand for green skills and services.
Working together for a sustainable future
Through LARA, Nottinghamshire is working with national and regional partners to reduce carbon emissions and support green growth. By collaborating with partners like The MCS Foundation and Connected Places Catapult, we are creating a long-term vision for sustainable homes and communities.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme launched in spring 2022, providing upfront capital grants to support the installation of heat pumps, and in some cases biomass boilers, in homes. Acting on behalf of property owners, installers can apply for:
- £7,500 off the cost and installation of an air source heat pump
- £7,500 off the cost of a ground source heat pump, including water source heat pumps
- £5,000 off the cost and installation of a biomass boiler

Smart Export Guarantee
An initiative to support small scale renewable energy generators where you can be paid for any excess electricity you generate and export to the grid. You can claim the tariff if you have any of the following technologies installed with a capacity of up to 5 megawatts (MW), or up to 50 kilowatts (kW) for Micro-combined heat and power (CHP):
- Solar photovoltaic
- Wind
- Micro combined heat and power
- Hydro
- Anaerobic digestion
The energy suppliers that offer smart export payments are only required to offer you a tariff that is greater than zero, therefore the rate each energy company pays is likely to vary. You should compare the tariffs available before agreeing a contract. Furthermore, the tariffs may be fixed or variable similar to your existing electricity tariff, but they are managed separately.
