Health Impact Assessment

A Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is a structured process used to evaluate the potential health effects of a policy, program, plan, or project before it is implemented. It is designed to predict how decisions in various sectors (such as urban planning, transportation or housing) might affect the health and wellbeing of a population. The goal of a HIA is to provide evidence-based recommendations that can mitigate negative health impacts and enhance positive health outcomes.

HIAs are used to improve decision-making by considering health as a central factor in planning and policy development. They are particularly valuable in projects that may influence environmental conditions, social determinants of health, or access to services. The HIA process helps ensure that public health is prioritised in decision-making and that all potential health risks and benefits are considered.

The Nottinghamshire Spatial Planning and Health Framework (NSPHF) includes a rapid HIA that is shorter and easier to complete than a comprehensive HIA, which would typically be undertaken as part of an Environmental Impact Assessment. The rapid HIA involves a brief assessment of health impacts using existing knowledge and evidence, and is designed to be accessible for a wider range of users.
